Santa in a Bulletproof Vest: The Peace Campaign Cutting Through Holiday Noise

How Finland’s CMI Peace Foundation uses a universal icon to confront an unstable world.

At a time when global conflict dominates headlines and uncertainty shapes public mood, Finland’s CMI Peace Foundation has reimagined one of the world’s most familiar symbols—Santa Claus—to deliver an urgent message about the fragility of peace. The creative boldness of placing Santa in a bulletproof vest is not shock for shock’s sake; it’s a reminder that peace requires vigilance, resources, and the quiet, persistent work that rarely makes the news. And at a moment when holiday advertising is at its most crowded and sentimental, this stark visual stands out as one of the season’s most unforgettable uses of a universal icon.

Peace Foundation from Finland Sends a Global Message

As global military spending reaches its highest level since the Cold War—over US$2 trillion according to the United Nations—the image of Santa in a bulletproof vest captures a growing global unease. Conflicts are increasingly shaping people’s daily lives across continents. By placing Santa in protective armor, CMI – Martti Ahtisaari Peace Foundation delivers a compelling visual metaphor that resonates across cultures: peace is fragile, and its absence shapes the world more than we acknowledge.

CMI’s Help Us Keep the Night Silent campaign serves a dual purpose: raising global awareness and mobilizing donations to support the organization’s peace mediation work in the world’s most fragile and polarized environments.

Even in an unstable world, essential work does not stop – not for Santa, and not for CMI,” says Hanna Klinge, Deputy Director General of CMI. “Peacemaking rarely makes headlines, but its absence defines them. With this campaign, we want to highlight the issues that shape our work every day, even when global conditions are difficult.”

Founded in 2000 by Nobel Peace Prize Laureate and former President of Finland Martti Ahtisaari, CMI has grown into one of the world’s leading peace mediation organizations. Over 25 years, it has supported more than 50 peace processes, building dialogue where formal diplomacy often cannot.

To mark its anniversary, CMI hosted a high-level event on 3 December in Helsinki featuring global leaders including:

  • Mary Robinson, former President of Ireland and former UN High Commissioner for Human Rights
  • HRH Prince El Hassan bin Talal of Jordan
  • Liberata Mulamula, African Union Special Envoy on Women, Peace, and Security
  • Fawzia Koofi, former First Deputy Speaker of the Afghan Parliament and Chair of Women for Afghanistan
  • Opening remarks by Alexander Stubb, President of Finland

The event premiered the campaign’s central film.

Why Santa? Why Now?

Santa Claus—widely associated with Finland and recognized across cultures—provides a unifying narrative moment. During a season defined by warmth, celebration, and commercial messaging, the decision to place a beloved holiday figure in a protective vest creates a powerful creative tension.

For marketers, the campaign is a case study in using:

  • Universal symbols with deep emotional resonance
  • Visual contrast to drive immediate comprehension
  • Strategic timing during an overcrowded holiday season
  • Cultural associations as soft power

At the heart of the campaign is a simple truth:
When even Santa needs protection, peace can no longer be taken for granted.

A Global Symbol with a Global Call to Action

The stark image underscores both the fragility of global security and the urgency of supporting those working to prevent and resolve conflicts. By using a familiar figure in an unfamiliar context, CMI invites audiences to see peace—as a concept, as a practice, as a global responsibility—through a fresh lens.

This is purpose-driven communication at its most direct and resonant.
