When an “Old Dog” Leads a New Purpose
How The Farmer’s Dog and Macy’s Turn Thanksgiving Into a Spotlight on Senior Pets.
This year, a special four-legged icon is helping shine a light on one of the most overlooked causes in animal welfare: senior dog adoption.
For the 99th Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade, Macy’s and The Farmer’s Dog brought back an unexpected celebrity—Freida the Dachshund, a beloved “balloonicle” who first debuted in 1949 and last appeared in 2003.

Now, Freida has returned to Manhattan’s holiday stage with a purpose: to celebrate the joy and vitality of senior dogs and the decades-long bonds we share with them.
Freida’s revival isn’t just nostalgic whimsy; it’s a clever symbol.
As an “older” parade balloon making her triumphant return, she becomes an ambassador for the many aging pets who are too often overlooked in shelters.
According to The Farmer’s Dog, Freida’s comeback inspired a November initiative called Freida’s Friends, which supports shelters during Adopt a Senior Dog Month. Through early December, adopters of senior dogs at partner organizations receive a free first box of food and $300 in credits—an incentive designed to spotlight dogs who may need a little extra help finding new homes. The shelters involved include Every Last One Rescue, Second Chance Rescue, and Waldo’s Rescue Pen, with more joining throughout the holiday season. The FarmersDog Thanksgiving
The Thanksgiving campaign also includes a new broadcast spot debuting during the Parade, subway ads in stations along the Macy’s Parade route, and social content built from real customer stories that reflect the lifelong companionship dogs provide. Rather than focusing on puppies—often the stars of pet-brand marketing—The Farmer’s Dog leans into quieter, more emotional narratives about aging together, staying active, and supporting dogs through their golden years.

By pairing a cherished parade tradition with a purposefully heartwarming message, the brand demonstrates how seasonal marketing can do more than entertain—it can gently challenge cultural assumptions about age, adoption, and what it means to care for animals across their full lifespan.
This creative connection between an iconic senior balloon and real senior dogs offers an unexpected seasonal reminder: longevity deserves love, and older pets can still light up our lives—sometimes even float above the city streets.
